daguliangsan (the big drum and cool umbrella dance) is a traditional folk dance popular in places like xiangcheng, longwen, jiaomei, and longhai around zhangzhou city in fujian province, china. it's now officially recognized as an important part of fujian's cultural heritage.
this dance started way back in the ming dynasty (during the jiajing era, 1522-1566). it was created by the soldiers of qi jiguang, a famous general who fought against japanese pirates. they would perform this group dance to celebrate their victories.
in the dance, you'll see anywhere from three or four pairs to over ten pairs of dancers. in each pair, one person has a large drum strapped to their chest, and the other person holds a big, decorative umbrella with both hands. they move with strong, stylish steps, constantly changing their dance formations. it's a truly spectacular and impressive sight to behold!
