the yinggeng pagoda at chongfu temple was constructed in 1068 ad, the first year of the xining era during the northern song dynasty. it is situated to the right of the temple's main entrance and to the east of the mahavira hall.
during the song and yuan dynasties, a period when buddhism flourished, it was common practice to build stone pagodas to house the sarira (buddhist relics) . these structures were not only symbols of buddhism's prevalence at the time but also tangible expressions of the people's heartfelt wishes for favorable weather, national prosperity, and public well-being.
