fujian tulou, predominantly built by the fujian hakka, are thus also known as "hakka tulou." with dozens of households, sometimes hundreds of people, living together in a single tulou, these structures reflect the hakka tradition of extended families dwelling together communally and harmoniously. therefore, the history of a tulou is, in essence, the history of a rural family clan.
