fuzhou has a long-standing tradition of making baizong (white zongzi, sticky rice dumplings), often incorporating peanuts. since these baizong have no filling and are made entirely of glutinous rice, they are typically enjoyed by dipping them in white sugar.
meanwhile, shaorouzong or meat zongzi, is a traditional delicacy from the minnan region of fujian. during the dragon boat festival, households in the minnan region prepare these shaorou zong as offerings to deities and ancestors. shaorouzong is distinguished by its meticulously selected ingredients and diverse fillings, which can include braised pork, shiitake mushrooms, lotus seeds, eggs (often salted yolks), dried scallops, and shrimp, among others.
